Justice Minister tables
2001 Newfoundland Court Judges' Salary and Benefits Tribunal Report

Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons tabled yesterday in the legislature the report and recommendations of the 2001 Newfoundland Court Judges' Salary and Benefits Tribunal.

The Provincial Court Act requires that a Salary and Benefits Tribunal be appointed every four years to make recommendations to the Minister of Justice on the salary and benefits of provincial court judges.

The Minister of Justice is required to table the report in the House of Assembly within 15 days of receipt and the House of Assembly is then required to consider the report within 30 days of its being tabled.

This process is set in accordance with constitutional principles established by the Supreme Court of Canada and is based on the principle of judicial independence.

Minister Parsons thanked the tribunal members for their hard work in reviewing the work of the court.
