Justice minister announces settlement of lawsuits
Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons announced today that disputes between government and a number of senior service employees have been resolved out of court.
"Government respects the rights of all its employees," said the minister. "It is important that all employees be treated fairly and equitably."
During the downsizing of the public service in 1995-96, a number of senior public service positions were made redundant as government cut costs to better provide frontline services within its fiscal capacity.
To date, 22 of 31 cases have been settled for a total of $1,038,602.90, with the remainder expected to be settled in the near future. Claimants have asked government not to disclose the amount of their individual settlements.
"The former management and executive employees have received a fair compensation package," noted the minister.
Government hopes to settle the remaining nine claims in the near future.
