Tourism projects announced for Northern Peninsula
The Central Development Association will receive $314,479 under the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement to undertake improvements to the tourism infrastructure in the communities of Three Mile Rock, Parson's Pond, Portland Creek, Daniel's Harbour and Belburns. Gerry Byrne, MP for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, on behalf of Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation on behalf of Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, announced the funds today.
"This part of the Northern Peninsula has many great advantages such as spectacular scenery and a rich diverse history," said Mr. Byrne. "This project will help develop the full potential that these great communities have to offer to the tourism industry on our coast."
"As we have noted in government's Jobs and Growth Renewal Strategy, recent growth in tourism has been phenomenal," said Kevin Aylward. "There were more than 400,000 visitors to the province last year. These new initiatives will further enhance the tourism experience for visitors and help to create new business opportunities for people living on the Northern Peninsula."
Project funds will be used for specific projects in the five communities:
- At Three Mile Rock, a look-out and stairway will allow visitors to reach a natural spring. The upgraded site, which will be consistent with similar facilities along the Viking Trail, will have picnic tables and interpretive signage.
- The many people who stop at Parson's Pond to take pictures and enjoy the view will find a new RV pull-off site and look-out with picnic facilities.
- The sand dunes at Portland Creek River have long been a popular spot with travellers on the peninsula. New interpretive signage will tell the story of how the dunes were built over time.
- A new walking trail from Daniel's Harbour through Bell's Wood to Portland Creek will have look-out platforms so that hikers can stop and watch the icebergs and whales that are common attractions on the coast.
- Interpretive signage and picnic facilities will also be built at the School House Look-Out in
Belburns.
The Canada/Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial programs and agreements; it is administered federally by ACOA and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
