Funds approved for development of tourism infrastructure
on St. Barbe Loop

The St. Barbe Development Association will receive $435,468 under the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement to develop tourism infrastructure along the St. Barbe Loop. Gerry Byrne, MP for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, on behalf of Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation on behalf of Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, announced the funds today.

"The enhancement of this area is a positive step forward for us as we develop our tourist attractions on the Northern Peninsula," said Mr. Byrne. "I am proud to be part of this continued growth and development on our coast and to have enjoyed such a solid collaboration with my federal colleagues, Robert Thibault and Brian Tobin."

Kevin Aylward said the province expects an increase in tourism activity around the St. Barbe Loop area. "With the completion of the Trans-Labrador Highway, and the ongoing development of the tourism product in Southern Labrador, I think we must continue to build the infrastructure, highlight the attractions and offer a travel experience that is as spectacular as the region itself."

The funds will be used to enhance the Black Duck Cove walking trail, upgrade the museum at Forrester's Point, develop tourism infrastructure at the ferry terminal site at St. Barbe and interpretive signage. In addition to the physical improvements, the funds will be used for research and skills development that will allow the association to continue to build the area's significant tourism potential.

The Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial programs and agreements; it is administered federally by ACOA and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
