Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador signs MOU
during cultural industries trade mission to Boston

The Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MIANL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Boston music organization NEMO. The MOU was signed during the provinces first cultural industries trade mission to Boston, part of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Developments ongoing New England Trade and Investment Initiative.

Denis Parker, MIANL, and Candace Avery, NEMO, signed the MOU last night in front of hundreds of people at a music showcase of Newfoundland and Labrador performers for Bostons industry representatives and the general public. George Sweeney, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development (Information and Advanced Technologies), participated in the signing ceremony and the showcase.

"This is both an exciting and promising initiative. We need to develop export opportunities for the artists and songwriters of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mr. Parker. "We strongly believe that the music produced in our province is world-class and we firmly embrace this partnership with NEMO to showcase our talent and facilitate business in the New England states."

Under the terms of the MOU, Newfoundland and Labrador musical performers will gain opportunities to perform at NEMO's Music Conference and Showcase in Boston, to be held April 11-13.

"I am looking forward to working with the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador in a concerted effort toward achieving our common goals of providing opportunities to musicians, enabling them to pursue music as a viable career," said Ms. Avery. "This is an exciting collaboration and I am confident it will be a productive one."

In its sixth year, NEMOs Music Conference and Showcase is one of North America's premier music industry events. It includes three nights of music featuring more than 200 artist showcases, the prestigious Boston Music Awards, two full days of panels, workshops, clinics and a trade show. Last year, performers were chosen from more than 1,300 applications.

The Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has a mandate to address key issues affecting the Newfoundland and Labrador music industry, increase its awareness locally, nationally and internationally and create and encourage opportunities which will stimulate growth of the industry. MIANLs membership includes musicians, composers, recording studios, distributors, managers, agents and other related music industry companies. The association currently has a membership of approximately 700.

"The MOU is a testament to the talent and potential of Newfoundland and Labradors musicians," said Mr. Sweeney. "We have a lot to offer the New England market, especially when it comes to our music and cultural industries in general. Our Renewal Strategy for Jobs and Growth identified cultural industries as a priority for growth. This mission is an important effort to capitalize on that."

The cultural industries trade mission to Boston occurred November 6-8, having been postponed from September 17, following the tragic events in the United States.

This mission is funded by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development and by the federal and provincial governments under the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement (CEDA). CEDA is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial economic development efforts. It is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
