United States Navy hosts international advanced
technology workshop at Marble Mountain
Scientists from leading research institutes around the world are meeting at Marble Mountain next week to discuss their technology research plans at a workshop hosted by the United States Navy.
Deputy premier and Industry, Trade and Rural Development Minister Beaton Tulk and MHA George Sweeney, parliamentary secretary to the minister on information and advanced technologies, will host a reception Sunday night to welcome the research scientists to the west coast of the province.
"This is a prestigious international workshop and we are very pleased that the U.S. Navy has chosen to hold the workshop on the island's west coast," said Minister Tulk. "This is an excellent opportunity to promote the province's advanced technology research facilities and the expertise that is available here in Newfoundland and Labrador, in particular Memorial University's world class research facilities."
Memorial University has several research centres including the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering (C-CORE), the Centre for Earth Resources Research (CERR), the Fisheries and Marine Institute and the Ocean Engineering Research Centre.
Dr. Dennis Peters from Memorial University's engineering department and Dr. Maynard Clouter from its physics department will represent Memorial University at the welcome reception. Dr. Clouter will also attend the workshop.
The United States Navy, Office of Naval Research (ONR), is leading the workshop on "Porous and Amorphous Wide Gap Semiconductors" at the Marble Mountain resort from June 10 - June 14. This is a by invitation only event and approximately 35 scientists from the United States, Russia, Australia and Japan are attending the workshop.
