Junior Team Canada Training Centre plans for another successful year

The three-day Junior Team Canada Training Centre is expected to be a success for the fourth consecutive year as more than 100 students from across Newfoundland and Labrador gather at Memorial University of Newfoundland today to participate in training and competitions related to globalization.

Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development announced funding of $35,000 for the initiative today.

"Hands-on experience is the best way for young people to learn the value of trade in the global economy," said Minister Thibault. "By providing youth with an educational experience and giving them the opportunity to learn about the global economy, we are helping them develop skills and attitudes to prepare them to work anywhere in the world."

Minister Tulk said the provincial government is pleased to support this year's Junior Team Canada Training Centre. "We recognize the value that it holds for Newfoundland and Labrador's young people. In educating our youth about trade and globalization, we are preparing them for the future."

Global Vision is hosting the training centre as part of 13 regional training centres taking place during April and May. Global Vision is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about the importance of trade in Canada's ability to compete in the global marketplace. This year's Newfoundland and Labrador Training Centre was planned in coordination with the Canadian Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters -- Newfoundland and Labrador Trade show.

The conference will address:

  • issues facing globalization and opportunities for careers in trade and development;
  • what it takes to be export ready;
  • case study competition;
  • Getting the Message Out presentation;
  • networking sessions with entrepreneurs, business, government and education leaders;
  • participation at the Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Trade
  • Show to meet with regional business leaders first hand;
  • developing a Global Youth Network to promote youth from across the province and around the
  • globe to share their resources; and,
  • finding out the skills needed for the new millennium.
Following the completion of essays, students will be selected to participate in the August 2001 trade mission to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Each year, Global Vision has guaranteed five spots for Newfoundland and Labrador students and each year at least seven participants have been selected.

New for this year, participants will choose a sector and identify companies from that sector at the trade show. The participants will then interview a company and provide a one-page write up on the company's operations.

The Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial programs and agreements. One component of the agreement is geared toward human resources development and entrepreneurship which is the focus of the Global Vision Junior Team Canada Training Centre and trade mission. It is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
