Canada Career Week: a time to explore your future

Gerald Smith, Minister of Human Resources and Employment, announced today the beginning of Canada Career Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. From November 4-10, people across the province and the country will be participating in events and activities that offer participants an opportunity to find out about trends in the labour market, pursue career interests, attend career fairs, talk to role models, or even volunteer in a chosen work environment.

"The theme of this year's Career Week is Learning - Power for Life," said Minister Smith. "This week is a great time for individuals from all stages of life to explore their future."

"The province is recording fantastic economic growth this year, and this is the time to take advantage of increased opportunities within our expanding provincial labour market," said Minister Smith. "The Department of Human Resources and Employment offers a number of resources to help people research career opportunities and options."

Through the department's Work Information Network, people across the province have access to the Newfoundland and Labrador WorkInfoNET (NLWIN) Web site and toll-free telephone service which provide information and guidance on career planning and employment.

Through NLWIN users can gain access to provincial information including labour market trends, job search and recruitment, self employment, current work issues as well as other employment topics. NLWIN can be accessed at www.gov.nl.ca/nlwin

The Work Information Network Telephone Service offers information and guidance related to career and employment issues as well as details on employment programs and supports. This service can be reached by calling toll free: 1-800-563-6600 or in the St. John's area, 729-6600.

"These are just two valuable resources that can be used when planning the future direction of your career path," said Minister Smith. "Whether you are deciding which post-secondary program to enter or planning on how to best use your time when you retire, Career Week activities are a great opportunity to educate yourself on how to shape your healthy future. I invite everyone to empower themselves through learning as we celebrate this special week."
