Employment continues to grow

Newfoundland and Labrador posted the highest year over year employment growth in the country for the month of April, according to Statistics Canada.

The latest Labour Force Survey reports that employment for the province rose by three per cent or about 5,800 jobs, the strongest showing of any province, as compared to April 2000.

Gains were mainly in wholesale and retail trade, professional, scientific and technical services, management, administrative and related services, and transportation and storage.

Despite these employment gains, the unemployment rate rose by 1.3 percentage points in April to 20 per cent. "This is largely reflective of increased labour force participation by people returning to or joining the labour force," said Gerald Smith, Minister of Human Resources and Employment.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate was 17.3 per cent, up by 0.7 percentage points.

"An increase in jobs is always good news. We have experienced a rise in employment numbers every month this year," said Minister Smith. "This would seem to point to a stronger and more active labour market for 2001."
