BACKGROUNDER
Single Parent Employment
Support Program (SESP)
- For 2001 - 2002, the department will
provide $500,000 for the Single Parent Employment Support Program (SESP).
- The pilot program is an active partnership
between HRE and the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland (SPAN).
The program is designed to assist single parents who receive income
support find meaningful employment.
- The SESP features a six-week training
period where participants receive instruction on resume writing,
communications, time and financial management along with other job
search skills. During the program time, and four-weeks after completion,
participants look for employment with the assistance of the programs
placement officers.
- From August 1998 to January 2001, 239
single parents have participated in this pilot. Of the 239, 124 are
currently employed and 40 are no longer in receipt of income support.
- An evaluation of the SESP by an
independent consultant, Don Gallant and Associates (completed in 2000),
confirms that the program works because of the combination of personal
supports, practical skills and financial assistance.
- The approach of SESP is being explored as
a possible template for other client groups and will continue to be
evaluated.
