Addictions Awareness Week

Julie Bettney, Minister of Health and Community Services, today proclaimed November 18 - 24 as Addictions Awareness Week. This year's theme is "It's Decision Time".

"It is very important to make the residents of this province aware of the problem of addictions and how lives can be affected by it," said Minister Bettney. "We are sending the message that it is important to be consciously aware of the impact addictions can have on our lives. We want people to know that they have choices and there are services and programs available to help them make decisions related to addictions."

Addictions Awareness Week is a time for self-reflection. It is a time to consider the impact of alcohol, other drugs, or gambling on the individual's life as well as those around him/her.

"I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to take time for reflection," said Minister Bettney. "Let this week be decision time for you."

The Department of Health and Community Services, together with the various regional and institutional health boards, and community groups, offers programs and services to assist those with addictions and those affected by addictions.

"I am very pleased with the work my department, the health boards, and community groups have achieved towards the fight against addictions," Minister Bettney said. "These organizations have programs and services in place to assist people in realizing the impact of addictions on their lives and to help those impacted to make positive decisions."
