Minister applauds NLMA for position on need for increase in federal health funding

Gerald Smith, Acting Minister of Health and Community Services, is pleased the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) has publicly recognized the need for increased health care funding from the federal government, something the province has been saying for a long time.

He said comments by Dr. Lydia Hatcher, president of the medical association, regarding federal Health Minister Allan Rock's recent address to the Canadian Medical Association, shows the organization understands the challenging financial position in which the province finds itself. Minister Smith said the NLMA's comments point to an understanding that without increased federal funding for health care, it is very difficult for the province to keep pace with new equipment needs, technology and compensation for its health professionals.

"We're happy to see the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association has taken the stand they have," said Minister Smith. "It is important Minister Rock gets the message that the federal government will have to put more money into the health care system.

"It is obvious the NLMA can also see that without this additional funding, we will not be able to manage rising costs or sustain the health system as we know it today."
