Provincial food and nutrition policy drafted

Gerald Smith, acting Minister of Health and Community Services, announced today the release of the second draft of the provincial food and nutrition policy Eating Healthier in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Over recent days, more than 120 provincial stakeholder groups were sent the policy document," said Minister Smith. "Government recognizes the important role that nutrition plays as a cornerstone of good health. Ensuring that all residents of the province have equitable access to an adequate, safe food supply and a network of food and nutrition services is the vision of this policy."

Stakeholders are being invited to review and provide feedback on this comprehensive document by June 1, 2001. In addition, a provincial Food and Nutrition Policy Stakeholder Forum will take place on May 29 in St. John's. Groups wishing to make presentations about the policy will be given an opportunity to do so in conjunction with this event.

"Feedback on Eating Healthier in Newfoundland and Labrador is welcome and necessary," said Minister Smith. "The input of stakeholders is crucial to ensure the needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are addressed. This input will help develop a final policy which will provide guidance to government, industry, organizations, community groups and members of the public in making decisions concerning food and nutrition."

Six provincial government departments partnered in the policy development. These departments include: Health and Community Services; Education; Fisheries and Aquaculture; Forest Resources and Agrifoods; Human Resources and Employment; and, Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
