Noel says zero tolerance for leakage of waste while transporting fish

Government Services and Lands Minister Walter Noel has issued a strong warning to fish buyers and truckers regarding spillage on highways from fish products.

The minister said his department has received numerous complaints from the general public, including tourists, ferry users, and service station owners about large amounts of fish waste and other spillage from fish trucks and containers.

Minister Noel said: "People are not only complaining about offensive smells, they are also concerned about the potential safety hazards associated with such spillage. This is a serious matter which must be immediately addressed.

"Government is advising all concerned that beginning June 25, 2001, there will be zero tolerance for any such spillage. Government Services and Lands officials will be monitoring the situation closely and will enforce all regulations.

"In addition to fines, any vehicle transporting fish containers found to be leaking during a roadside or weigh scale inspection will be forced to park until the leaking is remedied.

"Such complaints are not new and we have issued advisories to fish buyers and truckers in the past. Zero tolerance must be put in place and must be strictly enforced."
