Government launches Internet e-commerce site

Walter Noel, Minister of Government Services and Lands, on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, today officially launched the province's Internet e-commerce site and the first service to be offered on it, motor vehicle registration renewals.

Minister Noel said: "This is a significant day for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Due to the efforts of Treasury Board and Government Services and Lands, we now have a secure e-commerce system in place and vehicle registration renewal is but the first service application to be offered.

"Information technology is revolutionizing the way we do business and the public is demanding more immediate access to services. Government must keep pace."

Vehicle registration on the World Wide Web allows vehicle owners to renew and pay for their vehicle registration renewals on line. In addition to this electronic service, registrations can also be renewed by mail, through chartered banks, or in person at various Motor Registration Division offices or Government Service Centres.

On Monday, June 18, Government Services and Lands will distribute informational documents and brochures to those vehicle owners whose registrations are coming due and the system will actually go on line June 26 for those whose registrations expire July 31.

The web site for renewing vehicle registration on-line will be www.eservices.gov.nf.ca
Simple step-by-step instructions will be provided at this site to guide users through the renewal process.

Initially, only those whose vehicles are due for renewal within the next 45 days will be able to use the electronic service. Over the next year, as registrations come due for renewal, each vehicle owner will have on-line access. Once vehicle owners have access to the service, they can also use the new site for an immediate, electronic change of address.

Persons who do not have the Internet at home can access the World Wide Web by visiting a Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Community Access Site. Individuals interested in using this service can call 1-877-929-1829 toll-free to identify the access centre nearest them. Internet services are also available at all provincial libraries.

A copy of the brochure outlining the new service is available from Motor Registration Division offices and Government Service Centres. It is also available on line at www.gov.nl.ca/gsl
