Fuel spill committee begins work

The committee established to help reduce fuel spills holds its first meeting today.

The committee is the result of a consultation with stakeholders March 23 by Government Services and Lands Minister Walter Noel. It consists of representatives of the fuel service, environmental and insurance industries, as well as consumers and government officials. The committee will look at all aspects of leaks and spills, including prevention, insurance coverage, and clean-up costs.

"Every person who owns, fills, maintains, or insures a tank should be aware of their responsibilities. The cost of dealing with spills and leaks can be enormous. Owners of the source of a problem have financial responsibility for any damage caused. People without proper insurance coverage could be financially devastated.

"The tough winter weve experienced has made domestic fuel tanks and lines particularly susceptible to snow and ice damage. Many spills, however, can be prevented through regular maintenance and visual checks of tanks and lines, and clearance of snow and ice. This is a particularly serious problem at this time of year because of thawing and ground movement."

The minister says consumers should review their insurance policies to determine if those policies cover both themselves and others. Homeowners could be responsible for costs which usually range from $5,000 to $150,000.

The Department of Government Services and Lands is distributing a Domestic Fuel Spill brochure outlining more detailed information on homeowner responsibilities. It can be obtained by visiting or calling Government Service Centres. Information is also available on the departments web site at www.gov.nl.ca/gsl/

Spills can be reported 24 hours a day by calling (709) 772-2083 collect, or 1-800-563-2444.
