Expanded marine centre to benefit forestry and fishery in Cartwright

Lawrence O'Brien, MP for Labrador, on behalf of Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with Yvonne Jones, MHA-Cartwright - L'Anse Au Clair, on behalf of Rick Woodford, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and Ernest McLean, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, announced today that a contract has been awarded to H.J. O'Connell Construction to expand the existing marine centre in Cartwright, Labrador.

The $5.5 million project, which is being funded under the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement, will enable the region to further develop its forest and fishing industries and create a significant number of jobs in the area. Through this initiative, the existing Cartwright marine centre will be expanded to include up to 80 metres of wharf frontage, a lay down area for pulpwood storage, as well as upgraded road access to the marine centre. The project will also provide additional berthing space for fishing vessels.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support this important project, which will help the community of Cartwright to expand on both its forestry and fishery," noted Mr. O'Brien. "This initiative will also position the community as a transhipment centre for Northern Labrador and the Eastern Arctic and benefit the tourism and transportation industries in the region."

"This initiative is expected to create 50-60 new long-term jobs with an additional 60 short-term jobs," said Ms. Jones. She added that it would also benefit the forestry and fishery through improved shipping facilities. "This initiative is part of the provincial government's strategy to bring benefits to all of rural Newfoundland and Labrador."

Minister McLean said the project will create long-term sustainable employment in the region, and provide the necessary infrastructure to enhance other resource industries. "My department was instrumental in pushing this project forward," he said. "This project will have a tremendous economic impact on the community of Cartwright, and provide huge benefits for the entire region."

Work on the initiative will commence immediately. The project will be coordinated by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods.

The Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial programs and agreements. It is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
