Silviculture funding announced for The Straits and White Bay North

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford announced funding today in the amount of $335,400 for silviculture work in the district of The Straits and White Bay North. Funding is being provided through the provincial governments silviculture program.

"Silviculture investment is key to helping sustain the forest industry in this region," said Woodford. "Government realizes undertaking forest regeneration initiatives today will help ensure sources of fibre are available for the future."

Mr. Woodford also pointed out the positive impact for rural communities resulting from the silviculture program. "The meaningful employment created by these projects provide a critical boost to local economies throughout rural parts of the province."

Activity will take place in the areas of Roddickton and Main Brook. Work consists of pre-commercial thinning and planting. These treatments focus on stand improvement and recovery, while maintaining the health and integrity of the forest ecosystem.

Work is now under way, creating employment for 24 people over a period of 16 weeks.
