National Forest Week May 6-12

Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Rick Woodford, announced today that May 6 -12 is National Forest Week across Canada - a week set aside to create awareness of the importance of our forests to our social and economic well being.

This years theme is Canada: A Breath of Fresh Air, which focuses on the significant role our forests play in ensuring a healthy environment and clean atmosphere.

"National Forest Week is a time to reflect on the importance of our forests to every Newfoundlander and Labradorian. This years theme deals with the vital role our forests play in ensuring a healthy environment and the value of our forest resources to our every day lives, such as the air we breath and the space we live in," said Minister Woodford.

Mr. Woodford added that government is committed to the protection and sustainable management of our forests to ensure a healthy forest ecosystem for all of its users.

"Besides the importance of our forests to the environment, our forests also play a major role in the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador, creating approximately 10,000 jobs. National Forest Week is indeed an appropriate time to commend everyone involved in the forest industry and management of our forests for their commitment and dedication to this valuable resource," said Mr. Woodford.

Since its first observance over 80 years ago, National Forest Week has greatly enhanced our appreciation for Canadas forests. Mr. Woodford is calling upon all citizens to reflect on the many benefits we derive from the forests and support National Forest Week in our province this year.
