Two more rabies cases in Labrador

Dr. Hugh Whitney, provincial veterinarian with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, said today that two more cases of rabies have been confirmed in Labrador. The recent cases occurred in dogs in the communities of Sheshatshiu and Labrador City.

Dr. Whitney said Labrador residents are advised to:

  1. report all cases of strange behaviour in wild and domestic animals to local officials (conservation officers or police);

  2. report all cases of human contact to public health officials; and

  3. vaccinate all domestic dogs and cats, and otherwise control or eliminate all strays in communities.

Dr. Whitney said since November 2000, a total of nine cases of rabies have been confirmed in Labrador and adjoining areas of Quebec.

Questions on rabies should be directed to local officials or:
