4-H Week - March 17-23

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford is pleased to announce that March 17-23, 2001 is 4-H Week across Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr Woodford recently joined several members of the 4-H program to sign a proclamation declaring provincial 4-H Week.

Mr. Woodford said his department continues to be a strong supporter of this premier youth organization. "Our provinces young people have been involved in this organization for almost 65 years and it has played a major role in developing the leadership skills of many of the outstanding figures in our society. My department is very proud to be part of such a valuable organization which is having a positive impact on our youth in many communities around Newfoundland and Labrador."

A number of special events will be held during 4-H Week, including Clover Day, which is a kick-off to 4-H week and will see 4-H members all across the province wear their green and white with pride. Also, as part of their 4-H achievement, members will canvass door to door spreading the 4-H message and distribute 4-H mint candy to each household.

4-H has been part of rural Canadian life for more than 85 years and has been a large contributor to the personal development of over one million youth. In 2000, over 500 boys and girls from this province, ranging in age from five years old to 21 years old, participated in exciting club activities and 4-H projects such as dairy, horse, cooking, crafts, and woodworking. Senior 4-H members also had the opportunity to join other Canadian 4-H members in other parts of the world to participate in exciting and educational conferences, seminars and exchanges.
