Undercover wildlife operation results in 80 charges

Conservation officers from the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods have laid a total of 80 charges as a result of an investigation that took place in the areas of Port aux Choix, Lake Michael and Goodyear Lake this past summer and fall.

Six individuals as well as one company from Port aux Choix are facing charges under the Wildlife Act, Newfoundland Fisheries Regulations and guiding regulations. The multitude of charges include illegal hunting, illegal possession of big game, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, dangerous handling of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, guiding unlicenced hunters, guiding without a licence, willfully allowing meat to spoil, trafficking in big game, illegal netting, possession of a net near inland waters, possession of a fish taken contrary to regulations, angling during a closed season and fishing in a closed area.

In addition, one other individual from Port aux Choix has been charged by the RCMP for uttering forged documents and public mischief. As well, the RCMP and Transport Canada are continuing their investigation into matters arising from the wildlife investigation.

The individuals and the company are scheduled to appear in court on March 14, 2001 in Port aux Choix to answer to the alleged offences.
