Wildlife and forestry enforcement statistics for Western Region in 2000

The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Western Regional Services today released their compliance statistics for the 2000 calender year.

Conservation officers have laid a total of 1,239 charges and written warnings during this period. This represents an increase of 30 per cent over 1999 when 954 charges and written warnings were issued.

In 2000, charges and written warnings were issued for a wide variety of forestry and wildlife offences. There was 673 forestry related, 417 under the Wildlife Act and Regulations, 41 fishery, 91 under the ATV Act and Regulations, 12 Migratory Bird Act and five others.

Two major undercover operations on the Northern Peninsula highlighted conservation enforcement efforts in 2000. These two operations resulted in over 100 charges being laid against several individuals.

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Kevin Aylward attributes the rise in written warnings and charges to increased public support for enforcement efforts and the continued professionalism of the department's conservation officers. "A key component of effective enforcement relies on receiving cooperation from the general public," said Aylward. "The department's conservation officers have worked hard to develop effective relationships with users of our natural resources. As a result of such efforts people are more aware of the significant value they hold and are more willing to help and protect the resource. This assists in the department's ability to deliver a fair and consistent compliance program."
