Minister comments on Atlantic Recreational Fishing Licence Program

Gerry Reid, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today commented on the Atlantic Recreational Fishing Licence Program, which was announced by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

"I am pleased that DFO has announced the recreational fishery for this year, as the food fishery is representative of our right as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to fish those resources which are in our waters," said Reid. "While we recognize our right to a food fishery, we must also acknowledge that we have an obligation to be responsible in our actions, as we fish this precious resource. I would implore all of those who participate in the food fishery this season, to remember that we are still trying to rebuild our cod stocks and only through responsible fishing and conservation practices, can this goal be achieved."

Reid said that he remains very concerned about the lack of recovery of the cod stock in area 2J3KL, and called upon the federal government to increase spending in the area of scientific research.

"Only through increased spending in the field of science, can we determine the exact nature of those stocks and reasons why they are not recovering at a greater pace," added Reid. "As well, we must look seriously at the impact of the expanding seal population on the groundfish stocks. In the provinces presentation to the Eminent Panel on Seal Management, we recommended the establishment of seal exclusion zones in areas where we are trying to rebuild stocks. It is my hope that this recommendation will be accepted and implemented by the federal government."
