Premier introduces Newfoundland and Labrador Act in House

Premier Roger Grimes today tabled the Newfoundland and Labrador Act, officially changing the province's name in its statutes. This step to table legislation on the first day of the House of Assembly fall session reflects the recent action by the federal government to change the province's constitutional name. Government institutions and agencies will be affected by the name change, as titles including the word Newfoundland' will be joined by and Labrador.'

"I was pleased to introduce an Act today which formalizes the name Province of Newfoundland and Labrador' in our legislation and that will see this change reflected in our government institutions," said Premier Grimes. "This is an important step in recognizing the contributions of Labradorians in our society, and ensuring that provincial, national and international recognition is provided both geographical regions of our province."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Act will officially effect changes in the naming of government institutions and agencies. Currently, the constitutional amendment enabling the name change is in the final stages of approval in the Senate. It will then require royal assent from the Governor-General. The changes brought about by the provincial Act will take effect on the day the federal proclamation changing the name of the province takes effect.
