Fly the Flag of Remembrance Ceremony

Premier Roger Grimes and Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs Oliver Langdon will join officials of the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion in a Raise the Flag of Remembrance Ceremony today in the foyer of Confederation Building.

The ceremony, commencing at noon, is in recognition of the service and achievement of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians at home and overseas during the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War and in recognition of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country in the names of peace and freedom.

Premier Grimes acknowledged the significance of Remembrance Week activities, "This is an opportunity for us all to reflect on the tragedies of war and show our respect for those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom."

Minister Langdon stated, "We also keep in our thoughts, those who are engaged in military operations throughout the world so that we may continue to enjoy our democratic society."

"The Poppy is a symbol of reverence for those who have lost their lives while serving their country, and I hope that people will choose to wear one on their lapel during Remembrance Week," said Bill Titford, Program Chairman with the Royal Canadian Legion.

The ceremony will feature the traditional March on the Colours and performances by the Singing Legionnaires. It will serve as the launch for Remembrance Week, which is being observed from November 1 - 11.
