Premier comments on response to Web site offering messages of support to Canadian Forces

The support shown by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for the Canadian men and women engaged in the international campaign against terrorism has been exemplary, Premier Roger Grimes stated today. While a Web site allowing individuals to voice their support for Canada's forces has only been active for a little over a week, more than 200 messages have been received at www.gov.nl.ca/messages so far.

"I am pleased that people from our province, across Canada and in the United States have taken the opportunity to share their thoughts and prayers with members of our military," said Premier Grimes. "It appears that interest in our military action is high, and this has translated into support for the men and women who will work to preserve our rights and freedoms."

Premier Grimes commented that the significant response to the Web site, particularly by Canadians in other provinces and Americans, has likely been aided by an informal word of mouth campaign. "Right now, people are paying attention to matters of international consequence. This includes government action, and with the fine treatment afforded unscheduled visitors to our province, many of these people are telling their family and friends about our wonderful hospitality. I think it is safe to conclude that some of these people, in an effort to learn more about our province, have come across this Web site of support and left an encouraging message."

The premier said that the message board will continue to be posted on government's Web site for some time. He encouraged those who haven't left a message yet to do so, and also invited those who have already visited the site to read messages from others across the province, the country and around the world.
