Cabinet committee visits central region

The Economic Policy and Rural Revitalization Committee of Cabinet is heading to central Newfoundland on Thursday, October 25, in the fourth of its working visits in a province-wide tour. Earlier this month, the committee visited Labrador and the west coast of the island, and attended the Central Newfoundland Aquaculture Forum in Bay D'Espoir.

The tour focuses on meetings with the regional caucuses of the Regional Economic Development Boards (REDBs), as well as with other economic development stakeholders. The working visits also provide committee members with opportunities to see first-hand some of the economic development initiatives under way in the regions.

The committee's visit to central will include meetings with the central caucus of Regional Economic Development Boards as well as site visits in and around Gander and the Exploits Valley.

Committee chair Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, said that because the committee has responsibility for implementing government's Jobs and Growth agenda, the two-way sharing of information during meetings with Regional Economic Development Board caucuses has been extremely helpful.

Minister Tulk is looking forward to further open dialogue during the committee's upcoming visit.

"Government and the province's economic development stakeholders can work together to continue building the rural agenda. The exchange of views and information we have in these meetings helps keep the economic agenda focused and keeps our eyes on the target of economic growth throughout the whole province," he said.

"Despite the challenges experienced in the various regions of the province, we see many opportunities and a very positive attitude growing throughout the province."

The visit by committee members to central is particularly timely, as ministers will also have the opportunity to attend Rural EXPO 2001 in Gander on October 25-27.
