Minister celebrates Canada's Citizenship Week in the province

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Lush invites everyone in the province to join him in celebrating Canada's Citizenship Week from October 15-21. The theme for this year's event is Canada, We all Belong.

"I encourage each and every citizen to become active leaders and promoters for welcoming new immigrants into our province," said Minister Lush. "As Canadian citizens, we all have an important role to play in promoting our country and its freedom, and in welcoming new citizens to the wonderful country we are so proud to call home."

More than 3,600 new Canadians will take their oath of Canadian citizenship in over 60 ceremonies in communities across Canada during the course of the week. In Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately 50 citizens will be sworn in as new Canadians.

"In light of recent tragedies occurring in the world today, it is particularly important that we promote peace and harmony among each other," said Minister Lush. "Newfoundland and Labrador's people have long been known for their kindness and generosity and the response to the September 11 attacks in the United States is proof of that."

Canada's Citizenship Week, organized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, is an annual event that provides an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the value of citizenship, what it means to be Canadian, and the rights, privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.
