Cabinet committee touring Labrador

The Economic Policy and Rural Revitalization Committee of Cabinet will be in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area this week as part of a working visit to several areas of the province.

The committee will hold a number of meetings while in the area, including one with the Labrador regional caucus of the Rural Economic Development Boards (REDBs). The committee will also meet with other economic development stakeholders, and will participate in a tour of North West River.

The committee is responsible for implementing the province's Jobs and Growth agenda and, as such, the sharing of information with the Labrador regional caucus of the REDBs should prove to be both informative and beneficial, said Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernest McLean.

"We look forward to meeting with the Labrador regional caucus and discussing ways in which we can focus on strengthening the rural agenda," Minister McLean said. "We expect to have meaningful discussions, enabling us to help keep our economic agenda focused so that we can continue to build on the economic growth the province has been experiencing for the past several years."

Committee chair Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, said it is important to continue building on the positive "can do" attitude that has been growing in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This growing can do attitude was prevalent throughout our public consultations for Jobs and Growth," said Minister Tulk. "In this context, the committee's tour is consistent with the spirit of those consultations."
