Minister proclaims Sexual Violence Awareness Week

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Services and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, on Monday, September 17, met with representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre Inc to proclaim the week of September 17-21 as Sexual Violence Awareness Week in the province.

"This is the second time the province has proclaimed a week specifically raising awareness around the issue of sexual violence," said Minister Kelly. "I think it is important to recognize the need for all people, including those of us in government, to work together to ensure our communities are healthy and safe for everyone."

During the week there will be many events including a fund-raiser hosted by Moonlighting Promotions, a Native Healing Circle and a Poster Making Night. The week culminates with the annual Take Back the Night March and Rally on the steps of City Hall on Friday, September 21 .

"Violence prevention is a complex issue which is high on the agenda of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said Minister Kelly. " It requires collaboration between the community and government and a long-term commitment to eliminating the underlying causes of violence and to providing adequate services to victims in the province. I encourage everyone to become involved in the activities of this week and to continue working toward effective solutions to end violence in their communities."
