Following are the remarks delivered by Premier Roger Grimes at a ceremony held September 14 at Confederation Building to remember the victims of the recent tragedy in the United States:

Ladies and gentlemen, guests from the United States and other countries, I welcome you here today.

This is truly a sad time for all of us. We mourn today the loss of many innocent lives and we share the pain of all of those touched by this tragedy.

We in Newfoundland and Labrador have enjoyed a long, historic connection with the United States and many of us here today have friends and family who live in America. We fear Newfoundlanders and Labradorians may also have been lost in this tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the American people, the victims of this tragedy, their families and friends, and all of those affected by the events that have unfolded.

Of course, we have many people still with us in the province awaiting flights to return home.

I want to thank the thousands of volunteers who are continuing to provide invaluable assistance to all of our guests in this very difficult time. We are proud of your efforts.

It has given true meaning to the theme of the International Year of Volunteers: "the value of one and the power of many."

As we conclude this week and mourn together, let us reflect upon the value of family and friends, the value of freedom, and the value of peace and order in our individual lives and throughout the world.

Thank you and God Bless.
