Province to observe moment of silence in memory of victims of U.S. tragedy

Premier Roger Grimes today called on all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to join other Canadians in a national day of mourning for the victims of the tragedy in the United States.

"I am asking the people of this province to observe a moment of silence tomorrow, September 14, at 1:30 p.m. island time and 1 p.m. in most of Labrador, to remember the victims, their families and friends, the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who have suffered personal loss, and all of those affected by the events which have unfolded," said the premier. "Tomorrow at noon in Ottawa there will be a special ceremony on Parliament Hill attended by Prime Minister Jean Chretien, the U.S. ambassador to Canada and the entire diplomatic corps. The moment of silence in this province has been planned to coincide with that ceremony.

"We have chosen this particular gesture so that each and every person in the province may participate. It recognizes our historic close association with the American people, as well as the many thousands of people from that country and others who have been with us in recent days awaiting flights to return home."
