Nomination deadline approaching for provincial Volunteer Award

Premier Roger Grimes is encouraging individuals, organizations and other groups to nominate fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for the province's recently-launched Volunteer Medal. The award was introduced in June 2001, in recognition of the very important work done by volunteers throughout the province and in celebration of the International Year of Volunteers. Two individuals, one male and one female, from each of the province's 48 electoral districts will be presented with the medal later this year.

"The people of our province are known throughout Canada and, indeed, the world, for their incredible generosity and caring spirit," said Premier Grimes. "This year provides a wonderful opportunity to award the Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Medal and recognize extraordinary volunteers for their invaluable contributions to our communities and to our province as a whole."

The nomination process, which has been ongoing since July, closes on September 30. When nominations close, an independent committee will convene in the week of October 1 to review the submissions and select the 96 recipients from among the nominees.

Information about the Volunteer Medal, as well as nomination forms, are available at Government Service Centres and on government's Web site (www.gov.nl.ca/publicat/). Information and nomination forms have also be sent out to volunteer organizations and distributed publicly across the province.
