Inland Fish and Wildlife maintains presence on Avalon

Deputy Premier Beaton Tulk today announced that government will maintain a regional wildlife office on the Avalon Peninsula which will meet the wildlife management objectives and the needs of the public on the Avalon.

"Government wants to safeguard the province's wildlife program and see it run as effectively as possible," said Deputy Premier Tulk. "Today's adjustments to this division reflects this intention. Just as there is a regional wildlife office in Labrador, there will be one on the Avalon Peninsula to serve the large population located here."

In February the Inland Fish and Wildlife Division was transferred to the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and recently the headquarters for that division moved to Corner Brook. Ten positions will be maintained at the Avalon Regional office. This will allow work to continue on certain projects in partnership with Memorial University and other agencies involved with wildlife activities.

"The office on the Avalon Peninsula is required to maintain a regional presence in the area which serves a very large population," added Tulk. "The services provided to the public are of a hands on nature' and require a presence of wildlife professionals in that region. This is all part of providing services to meet the needs of the public in the regions of the province."
