Premier offers condolences to the family of the late Frederick Russell, former
Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador

Premier Roger Grimes today offered condolences to the family of the late Frederick W. Russell, former Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Russell passed away on Wednesday, June 20.

"For sixty years, Mr. Russell served his province and his country," said Premier Grimes. "His immense contribution included military service and volunteering in many capacities, including economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador."

As the Queen's representative in the province, Mr. Russell served as Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1991 to 1997. After retiring in 1955 as Wing Commander, RCAF Reserve, he began a distinguished career in the business community. He led numerous successful companies, held senior board and volunteer positions in a number of business organizations, and was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, St. John's.

"I know that all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians join me today in extending sympathy to the family of Mr. Russell. His contribution to our society and to our government is acknowledged and will always be remembered and appreciated."
