New policy framework helps make shipbuilding industry more competitive

The new national policy framework for the Canadian shipbuilding and industrial marine industry is an important step forward in creating a level playing field for the industry and helping make it more competitive, says Premier Roger Grimes.

"In the absence of a national policy, the Canadian shipbuilding industry was a dying industry because it was unable to be competitive with some other jurisdictions. I am confident that when the new measures outlined in the new policy are implemented, the climate for the shipbuilding sector in the country will be enhanced considerably over the long term," Premier Grimes said.

"A supportive federal policy is critical to revitalize the shipbuilding and heavy fabrication sector on an internationally competitive basis," he said.

Beaton Tulk, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, said he is also pleased that a national shipbuilding policy is being implemented, particularly so soon after the National Partnership Task Force Report on Shipbuilding was released April 5.

"I commend Industry Canada Minister Brian Tobin for acting so quickly on the recommendations made by the task force. With a level playing field, the facilities in this province can compete with facilities anywhere in the world. Implementing the new policy framework will help the industry rebound by creating conditions that make Canada a more attractive location for shipbuilding and marine fabrication work," Minister Tulk said.

Premier Grimes said the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is looking forward to working with the federal government in the implementation of the policy framework.
