Public Service Award of Excellence launched during Public Service Week

Public servants in Newfoundland and Labrador are now eligible for an award that recognizes excellence in the work they do.

"The new corporate award, for which all provincial government departmental employees are eligible, salutes the valuable contribution public servants make to the quality of life in this province," said Deborah Fry, the Clerk of the Executive Council, speaking at a Public Service Week event today.

The Public Service Award of Excellence will recognize individuals and teams who have demonstrated excellence in one of the four following areas: innovation; excellence in service delivery; valuing people; and, leadership.

"Excellence and pride in work are two integral components of all activities which public service employees perform on a day-to-day basis. These form the cornerstone of a professional, competent public service that we are proud to call our own," said Ms. Fry. "It is through award programs such as this that we recognize with pride employees who contribute their talent, time and dedication to the public service."

Premier Roger Grimes applauded the award. "It is through showcasing the excellence of our provincial public service employees and their commitment to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador that the organization demonstrates the value it places upon employees."

Individuals or teams may be nominated for the award by their peers. Nomination forms and further details will be forthcoming in the fall. The announcement of recipients and a recognition ceremony is planned for early 2002.

The Public Service Award of Excellence is a new initiative for the public service of Newfoundland and Labrador. It adds to the number of recognition initiatives already under way within the provincial public service, including long-service and retirement programs; nominations to national and international public service awards; and, recognition of employee achievements at the departmental and corporate levels.
