Minister meets with federal minister on provincial issues

Tom Lush, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, met yesterday with federal Minister of Human Resources Development Canada Jane Stewart in Ottawa to discuss a number of important issues relating to Newfoundland and Labrador, among which was the plight some fishermen are facing as a result of problems caused by heavy ice conditions off the coast of Newfoundland.

"I indicated to Minister Stewart that severe ice conditions off the Northeast coast of Newfoundland are preventing fish harvesters from fishing as they normally do this time of year," said Minister Lush. "I also pointed out to the minister that the fish harvesters' Employment Insurance benefits ended some weeks ago and that they have been without income since that time."

Minister Lush brought up the matter with the support and encouragement of Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Gerry Reid. Both ministers have expressed their concern about the dilemma being faced by these fish harvesters and are asking for the federal government's assistance in this very serious situation.

"Minister Stewart agreed that this is a very serious matter and indicated that she would speak to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in an effort to address the issue," said Minister Lush. "I am hopeful that some action will be initiated shortly to address this serious situation in which fish harvesters and their families find themselves in."
