Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Campground and Cabin Lot Development
Proponent: Lomond River Lodge Ltd. (Clayton Laing, President)

The proponent intends to develop a 4.97 hectare quarry site for which he owns the mineral lease by landscaping the quarried areas, doing a general cleanup and beautification, organizing a quality camp site for travel trailers that set up there annually, and developing four to six cabin lots. The proposed location for cabin lots is the opposite side of Route 431 from Lomond River Lodge, 10 kilometres from Wiltondale and near the boundary of Gros Morne National Park. Construction is planned to take place over two years starting as early as April 2002. Up to four jobs will be created during the development period and there will be one permanent seasonal job when development is completed. The project was registered on December 20, public comments are due January 24, and the minister's decision is due February 3.

UNDERTAKING CONDITIONALLY RELEASED:

Five Year Operating Plan (2002 - 2006), Forest Management District 16
(Lower portion of Great Northern Peninsula)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.

The minister has released the undertaking, in part, on the following terms and conditions:

That part of the undertaking outside the Main River watershed is released from further environmental assessment subject to any other act or regulations.

With respect to that part of the undertaking within the Main River watershed there is insufficient detail to determine the significance of the environmental effects and, therefore, an Environmental Preview Report (EPR) is required.

The EPR must focus on the Main River Watershed and provide additional information which includes, but may not be limited to, harvesting methods and potential environmental effects on other resource uses in the area.

The EPR will be prepared by the proponent based on guidelines issued by the minister. The EPR will be available to the public for comment once it is received by the minister.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Director of Environmental Assessment at (709) 729-2562 or toll-free: 1-800-563-6181 or by mail to:
