Copies of documents may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment at (709) 729-2562 or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Use of Updated Practice Laser Guided Munitions at 5 Wing Goose Bay Practice Target Area
Proponent: Department of National Defense

The proponent proposes the use of updated practice laser guided munitions at the 5 Wing Practice Target Area (PTA) near Minipi Lake. An additional safety template (approximately 2,000 square kilometres) is proposed beyond the existing PTA to provide for public safety in the case of a malfunction. Control of the site will be transferred to the federal government from the province. The newer version of practice laser guided-bombs are more accurate, heavier and have larger wing surfaces. Because they are also launched from a higher altitude, they have the capability to glide considerably farther than the current designs. The undertaking was registered on December 11, public comments are due January 16 and the minister's decision is due on January 25.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Director of Environmental Assessment at (709) 729-2562 or toll-free: 1-800-563-6181 or by mail to:
