UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Garden Hill Drilling and Production Program - Stage 1
Proponent: Canadian Imperial Venture Corp.

The proponent, Canadian Imperial Venture Corp., on behalf of Hunt Oil and PanCanadian, proposes to undertake a staged drilling and production program at the Garden Hill oil field on the Port au Port Peninsula. Drilling will proceed using conventional drilling methods by a triple rotary rig. The rig is a mobile diesel-electric powered rig and will be assembled on site. Water-based drilling muds will be used and drill cuttings will be trucked off-site and disposed of by a registered waste-handling contractor. Two wells are expected to be capable of a combined production of approximately 3,000 barrels of oil per day. The site is approximately 4.4 ha and has been prepared with Class A aggregate. The drilling pad is approximately 0.5 ha and is graded, flattened and hardened. All drilling will take place on the drilling pad. The production facility will be approximately 15.25 m by 3 m and will contain equipment for separation and treatment of produced oil, natural gas and water. Oil will be stored and trucked daily to the Come by Chance refinery, some natural gas will be used but the rest will be flared, and produced water will be trucked, treated and disposed of by a registered waste handler. Administrative services will be located in temporary trailers. At the end of production in November 2003, the site will be decommissioned and rehabilitated as necessary.

The undertaking was registered August 27, 2001, public comments are due October 2, and the minister's decision is due October 11.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Director of Environmental Assessment at (709) 729-2562 or toll-free: 1-800-563-6181 or by mail to:
