Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Copies of documents may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment at 729-2562 or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Hammerdown Mine
Proponent: Richmont Mines Inc.

The proponent proposes to develop a gold mine at Hammerdown on the Springdale Peninsula south of King's Point. The Hammerdown property is contained within 96 hectares. Most of the infrastructure is in place as a result of the test-mining program previously conducted. These structures consist of existing access roads, portal, various on-site buildings, 25 kV transmission line and various stockpiles for backfill, rock and ore. The undertaking will employ 66 people at full production. The proponent proposes to begin the undertaking in September 2001. The project was registered August 3, 2001, public comments are due September 7, and the Minister's decision is due September 17.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Forest Management District 15, Amendment to Five Year Operating Plan (South of Pasadena)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited

The minister has released the project from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act.

Roddickton Underground Salmon Pool Viewing
Proponent: White Bay Central Development Association

The minister has released the project from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act.

UNDERTAKING WITHDRAWN:

Deer Lake North Shore Recreation Area
Proponent: Department of Government Services and Lands
