Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Copies of documents may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

1) Amendment to Five Year Forest Operating Plan, District 16 (Hinds Lake and Snowy Lake)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited 

The proponent proposes the construction of 23.5 kilometres of resource road and the harvest of 5,000 cubic metres of timber from two locations, Hinds Lake and Snowy Lake. Twenty kilometres of road would be constructed and 2,000 cubic metres of timber would be harvested at Hinds Lake (southeast of Grand Lake). Three and one-half kilometres of road would be constructed and 3,000 cubic metres of timber would be harvested at Snowy Lake (north of the Upper Humber River). The proponent proposes to begin road construction and timber harvesting this summer. The project was registered on June 22, 2001, public comments are due August 3, and the minister's decision is due August 6.

2) Five Year Forest Operating Plan, District 17 (2002 - 2006)
(Bellburns to Castor River North)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited

The plan includes a description of public consultations; existing and proposed forest access roads; operating areas designated for timber harvesting; timber harvesting methods and rehabilitation plans; an estimate of the total allowable harvest; and proposed silviculture treatments. The project was registered on June 22, 2001, public comments are due August 3, and the minister's decision is due August 6.

3) Clarenville Marine Recreation Facility
Proponent: Rotary Club of Clarenville

The project consists of the construction of a new shore-based, floating marina infrastructure to facilitate a recreational/tourism boating-based industry at Dark Hole, Clarenville. The proponent proposes to remove existing wharves and sheds; construct waterfront breastwork, mooring piers, launch ramp, finger piers, breakwater, roads and parking, and a waterfront building over a period of two to 2.5 years. The project was registered on June 26, 2001, public comments are due August 3, and the minister's decision is due August 10.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

1) Five Year Management Plan District 5 (Goose Cove) Amendment
Proponent: Newfoundland Forest Service, Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The minister has released this project from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act.

2) Special Waste Transfer Station, Donovans Industrial Park, Mount Pearl
Proponent: ASCo Canada Ltd. 

The minister has released this project from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act.
