Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received, copies may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTED:

Avondale Automobile Drag Racing
Proponent: Newfoundland Stock Car Association

On May 24, 2001 the minister required an environmental preview report (EPR) to address environmental issues related to the undertaking. As required by the Environmental Assessment Act, the minister has now appointed an Environmental Assessment Committee. The committee has representation from the provincial Departments of Environment, Government Services and Lands, and Municipal and Provincial Affairs. The committee will develop the guidelines which will highlight the environmental issues to be addressed in the EPR. Once approved by the minister, the guidelines will be made available to the public for information. The proponent is required to submit the EPR which will be made available for public review.


UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Deer Lake North Shore Recreation Area
Proponent: Department of Government Services and Lands

The proponent proposes a 43 lot freehold recreational cottage area and a 40 lot remote license to occupy recreational cottage area within an 8,891 hectare area reserved for passive outdoor recreation and compatible activities. The freehold cottage area will require the construction of approximately 1,800 metres of road having a width of 65 metres. The area is located on the north shore of Deer Lake. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin in the fall of 2001. The project was registered on June 14, 2001, public comments are due July 20, and the minister's decision is due July 29.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
