MMSB requests proposals for scrap tire management in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) announced today that it is inviting proposals for a scrap tire management program in Newfoundland and Labrador. This program is part of the provincial government's ongoing commitment to a cleaner environment and its goal to significantly reduce waste disposal in the province. The principal objective of the proposed program is to ensure that waste tires generated in the province are disposed of without negatively affecting the environment. Parties wishing to be considered for this opportunity must submit a proposal to the MMSB. The closing date for receipt of proposals is Monday, June 11.

"The scrap tire management program is another positive step toward environmental health in the province," said Gordon Seabright, MMSB chairman. "The MMSB is very supportive of waste management initiatives such as this one as it will help increase the amount of material that is diverted from the landfills."

It is estimated that Newfoundland and Labrador generates approximately 500,000 scrap tires annually. A large portion of these tires are being disposed of in landfills or are being stockpiled. This program will reduce the number of tires sent to landfill sites and provide Newfoundland and Labrador with a safe and economical way to divert waste tires.

"I am very pleased that the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board is moving forward to develop other stewardship initiatives such as a scrap tire management program," said Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Environment. "Developing these types of programs will help our province move towards more progressive waste management and improve the environment for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

The MMSB, which was established in 1997, operates as a Crown agency of the Department of Environment. The MMSB's mandate is to develop, implement and, where appropriate, manage a variety of waste diversion strategies in the province. The MMSB is currently responsible for the Beverage Container Recycling Program, a pilot Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program and the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.
