Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the Department of Environment or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Five Year Management Plan District 4 (Terra Nova) Amendment
Proponent: Newfoundland Forest Service, Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The proponent has proposed an amendment to the existing Five Year Management Plan to permit timber harvesting which was not able to be completed prior to the submission of the management plan. The area to be harvested is located at Triton Brook southwest of the Town of Gambo and covers approximately 113 ha of productive forest within a total area of 333 ha and will involve harvesting approximately 8,500 cubic metres of merchantable softwood. Existing roads will be used to access the timber. The project was registered on April 25, 2001, public comments are due May 31, and the minister's decision is due June 9.

Five Year Management Plan District 5 (Goose Cove) Amendment
Proponent: Newfoundland Forest Service, Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The proponent has proposed an amendment to the existing Five Year Management Plan to permit flexibility for three existing Crown operators to fill 2001/2002 permits. The area is submitted as an alternative to originally proposed areas which may not be accessed due to unfavourable terrain and is located in the vicinity of Goose Cove on the Content Peninsula. The area covers approximately 328 ha of productive forest within a total area of approximately 810 ha and involves a harvest of approximately 20,000 cubic metres of merchantable softwood. Construction of approximately 7.5 km of new class C-2 access road will be required. The project was registered on April 25, 2001, public comments are due May 31, and the minister's decision is due June 9.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Millertown Area Gravel Quarry, Midland Construction Limited

The minister has released the project from environmental assessment in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act.
