Labrador Straits (Forteau Area) Vegetable Peat Bog Pilot Project
Proponent: Southern Labrador Development Corporation
The Southern Labrador Development Corporation proposes to develop an experimental peat farm on four hectares of land just north of Forteau and west of the main highway for the growth of root crops. Also there would be attempts to grow ornamental/medicinal plants such as seabuckthorn, and to assess the potential for a composting industry using peat, fish offal, wood chips, sawdust, and/or kelp. It is proposed to begin work the end of May with from two to four jobs to be created in crop production and two more for composting. After three years, it is intended to sell or lease the operation to the private sector. The project was registered March 30, public comments are due May 4, and the minister's decision is due May 14.
The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Director of Environmental Assessment at (709) 729-2562 or toll-free: 1-800-563-6181 or by mail to:
