Continued funding for environmental remediation work

Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Environment, today announced that government will continue its support for environmental remediation work at abandoned sites with an $800,000 allocation in the 2001-2002 Budget.

The funding will enable the completion of clean-up work at abandoned military sites at Jerrys Nose and West Bay on the Port au Port Peninsula and in St. Anthony. This is the third year that funding has been approved for environmental remediation work at abandoned sites. Over the past two years, activities focused on the removal of PCBs and PCB-contaminated material from storage sites to approved destruction facilities.

"Government recognizes the importance of improving and enhancing the environment of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Wiseman. "With this funding, we can continue our site remediation work in the province, and improve the environment for the enjoyment of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."
