Minister explains actions to address fuel spill at OBrien Property

Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Environment, today explained the actions taken to address the domestic fuel spill at the OBrien property in St. Johns.

"On Tuesday, March 6, a ministerial order was issued to Aloysious and Mike OBrien with respect to the fuel spill on their property. When dealing with fuel spills where the owner is unable to take immediate action to clean-up the spill and the circumstances warrant, it is normal procedure to issue a ministerial order which ultimately gives government authority to enter the property to begin the necessary remediation work," explained Minister Wiseman.

"It became apparent to me, that despite the efforts of Mr. OBrien to address the clean-up of the spill, a faster response was needed. I felt it necessary to take action in order to minimize the impact on the adjacent properties and the nearby water course. As Minister of Environment, my first responsibility is to protect the environment," said Minister Wiseman.

The minister also said that in light of recent events, government will be reviewing the policies and procedures for addressing fuel spills. In addition, government will begin developing, in consultation with insurance and fuel companies, a public education campaign which focuses on informing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians of how to best prevent domestic fuel spills, and of their responsibilities in the event a spill does occur.
